I haven’t read a lot of love stories, but there are many novels which claim that they are the greatest love story of all time. It is only in the case of this novel that that statement can be applied and be true. Though tragic in the end, it still is one of the most beautiful literary pieces I have read. Even if you are not fond of books, no worries, there’s a famous movie of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

  1. “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired.”
  2. “The loneliest moment in someone’s life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.”
  3. “Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope.”
  4. “All I kept thinking about, over and over, was ‘You can’t live forever; you can’t live forever.”
  5. “Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart, I love her all the time.”
  6. “ There are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice”.
  7. “He smiled understandingly — much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced — or seemed to face — the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favour. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.”
  8. “Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.”
  9. “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.”
  10. “Can’t repeat the past?… Why of course you can!”
  11. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.”
